Founded by David Belo and Angelika Anangnostou in 2012, Naviluna not only sources its cacao beans directly from farmers but also grows its own cacao in a sustainable, organic farm in Mysore. In 2021, Mason & Co, raised INR 3 crore in a seed funding round led by Dipak Raj Sarmah, a former director of Cadbury India. "The artisanal chocolate market in India is at an inflection point," says Sarmah, who believes that the segment has the potential to grow exponentially in the coming years. "Consumers are becoming more discerning and are willing to pay a premium for high-quality, handcrafted products. Mason & Co, with its focus on sustainable sourcing and innovative flavors, is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend."

However, investing in artisanal chocolate startups is not without its challenges. The bean-to-bar process is labor-intensive and requires significant investment in equipment and training. Startups also face challenges in terms of scalability, as the handcrafted nature of the products limits production capacity. Moreover, the premium pricing of artisanal chocolates may limit their appeal to a niche segment of consumers, making it difficult to achieve significant market share.
